The purpose of this web page is to inform on the usage of DATEX II in existing National Access Points (NAPs) across Europe.
Through the ITS Directive, the European Commission aims to develop a harmonised and seamless provision of travel and traffic information services and to support interoperability across the Union. To do this, Member States are encouraged to rely on existing technical solutions and standards such as DATEX II in the implementation of their National Access Points. As of December 2019 almost all Member States have operational National Access Points, while the use of DATEX II differs for the different information services. Overall we see a constant increase in the use of DATEX II in the different NAPs. One important barrier is the knowledge needed to start working with the DATEX II standard. This is why the DATEX II Organization has developed the DATEX II Academy, making it easier for users from all backgrounds and experience levels to get started with DATEX II for their specific situation. Next to the Academy, our bi-annual User Forum (to be held in November 2020) is a great place to share knowledge and experiences on a variety of subjects. And of course our experts are always available to help you with any questions you may have concerning the implementation of the ITS Directive!
The map below gives an overview per country (if available) of the use of DATEX II in their National Access Points for:
- Safety Related Traffic Information (SRTI)
- Real-Time Traffic Information (RTTI)
- Safe and Secure Truck Parking Areas (SSTPA)
- Multimodal Travel Information Services (MMTIS)
As we are currently not able to show the exact (parts of the) data types that are covered by DATEX II, the map simply indicates the of DATEX II in (part of) one or more of the data types for each of the information services. This is especially true for MMTIS, which has many standards for different topics.

This map is based on data collected by the EU ITS Platform (or EU EIP project), specifically by the Working Group “Harmonization of National Access Points”. This Working Group has conducted a survey that monitored the implementation of National Access Points across Europe. As the use of DATEX II in the NAPs is a fundamental step towards harmonization, the survey also includes questions on the usage of DATEX II. This data was used as input for the map shown above.
